![]() and even dismissing multiplayer, in 2007, other FPS games defined the narrative for the FPS genre going forward.īioShock was definitely more defining game in terms of storyline and atmosphere in FPS games in 2007, far above Halo 3. Then Voyager, for the life of itself, cannot make the Borg threatening by the end of the series because they're really frequent baddies of the week (and sometimes allies!)Ĭlick to expand.I never cared for multiplayer.but I found the campaign lackluster. You see them a little too much in too short a time. You have a movie dedicated to fighting them and they're still cool, but you start to lose something. Hell, the perfect example for me is the Borg - they're introduced in TNG and they're bad ass and scary. Diablo is creepy as hell, Diablo 2 has its moments but is definitely more focused on other elements, Diablo 3 has no horror elements outside of classic enemy design. I think it's why outside of dedicated horror games, you rarely have sequels try to maintain the feel of previous creepy games. The more you see something, the less scary it'll be. It's something Halo 2 didn't really go for. Infiltrating a covenant ship in Halo had a Aliens sort of vibe - rushing into enemy infested territory to save someone (maximized by being the the first appearance of the Brutes and of cloaked enemies). Fact.Ĭlick to expand.Horror is also something, even just in the form of creepiness, is hard to maintain. I'd score the game 4/10, based on relative scores and scoring systems of that time period. To add insult to injury, Halo3 had crude, unrealistic physics and unrealistic enemies, which made you feel like you were playing some archaic arcade blaster, and not a real, modern shooter. There was no real story, and no real atmosphere to it. Halo3 was simple shooter, where you just ran forward and shot everything you saw. I'd score the game 8/10, based on relative scores and scoring systems of that time period. But because it had very realistic physics and design, it had a sense of realism, which added to the already great atmosphere, and gave you the feeling of really being there. Quake 4 was a grim, intense shooter, with good story. ![]() Here we will take an unbiased look at these two great games, to determine which was actually better.Īnd as Quake 4 came out earlier, let's start with it.
